Teaching
Educational Philosophy
As a teaching artist with over five years of experience teaching acting, musical theater, and technical theater, I believe that the performing arts are not merely disciplines to be mastered but powerful vehicles for personal growth, creativity, and connection. My educational philosophy centers on the conviction that every student has the potential to flourish when provided with a supportive, engaging, and inclusive environment. Rooted in a child-centered perspective, my approach empowers students to discover their unique voices, cultivate their artistic talents, and develop essential life skills that extend far beyond the stage.
Creating a Safe and Inclusive Space
The foundation of my teaching lies in creating a space where students feel safe to explore, take risks, and express themselves authentically. Theater, by its very nature, requires vulnerability, and I am committed to fostering a classroom culture that celebrates diversity, inclusivity, and mutual respect. By embracing each student’s unique background, experiences, and perspectives, I aim to cultivate an environment where every individual feels valued and seen. This sense of belonging not only enriches the creative process but also nurtures empathy and collaboration—skills that are vital in all aspects of life.
Fostering Creativity and Collaboration
Theater is a collaborative art form, and my teaching emphasizes the importance of teamwork and collective creativity. Whether students are working on a scene, a musical number, or a technical design, I encourage them to listen actively, communicate effectively, and support one another. By engaging in group projects and ensemble work, students learn to appreciate the contributions of others and understand the importance of collaboration in achieving a shared vision. These experiences help build confidence and a sense of community, reinforcing the idea that success in theater—and in life—is often a team effort.
Developing Life Skills Through the Arts
While my primary focus is on teaching acting, musical theater, and technical theater, I view the arts as a means to develop essential life skills. In my classes, students learn to think critically, solve problems creatively, and adapt to new challenges. They practice effective communication, both verbal and nonverbal, and develop resilience by embracing mistakes as opportunities for growth. The confidence they gain from performing, the discipline they cultivate through rehearsal, and the empathy they develop by stepping into the shoes of others are skills that will serve them well in any path they choose to pursue.
Encouraging Self-Discovery and Empowerment
I am passionate about helping students discover their unique talents and voices. My teaching approach is student-centered, meaning that I adapt my methods to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of each individual. I encourage students to take ownership of their learning by setting personal goals and reflecting on their progress. Whether it’s the shy student finding their confidence on stage or the technically minded student discovering a love for lighting design, my goal is to empower every student to realize their potential and take pride in their accomplishments.
Inspiring a Lifelong Love of the Arts
At the heart of my philosophy is a desire to inspire a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts. I believe that exposure to theater enriches students’ lives by fostering creativity, cultural awareness, and a sense of wonder. By introducing students to a wide range of theatrical styles, techniques, and traditions, I aim to broaden their horizons and ignite their passion for storytelling. Whether they go on to pursue a career in the arts or simply carry the lessons learned in my classroom into their everyday lives, I hope to instill in them a deep and enduring love for the creative process.
As a theater educator, my mission is to guide students on a journey of artistic and personal growth. Through a child-centered approach that emphasizes inclusivity, collaboration, and self-discovery, I strive to create an environment where every student feels empowered to explore their creativity and develop skills that will benefit them for a lifetime. Theater is more than a subject I teach; it is a tool for transformation, a celebration of human connection, and a testament to the boundless potential of young minds.
